3ti installs smart EV solar charging hub for leading renewable energy provider Segen

Segen, the UK’s leading renewables distributor, has installed a Papilio3 smart EV solar charging hub at its Training Academy and Distribution Centre in Medway, Kent. The installation provides sustainable workplace charging for staff and trainees, supporting Segen’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and training the next generation of renewable energy professionals.

Segen offers the largest portfolio of solar panels, energy storage systems, mounting systems EV chargers and heat pumps on the market. This collaboration between the two like-minded leaders in the renewables sector will further assist with decarbonisation initiatives at the busy Segen site, while also reducing reliance on the National Grid..

The Segen Academy is a purpose-built, state-of-the-art training facility aimed at tackling the country’s critical shortage of qualified renewables installers and supporting the Government’s net-zero targets. With the capacity to train around 1,600 individuals each year, it will play a pivotal role in equipping apprentices and electricians with essential skills for the expanding solar PV, battery, heat pump and EV charging markets. The Papilio3 EV charging hub will be available to anyone working or training at the Academy. For utmost convenience to its users, it is compatible with RFID cards, app access and contactless payment methods.

The customised Papilio3 unit, which will be rented from 3ti on a three-year contract, has been liveried in Segen corporate colours and equipped with TV screens to advertise courses, products and generation figures. Papilio3 is a clean, simple and rapidly deployed smart EV solar charging hub, designed to support the urgent need for sustainable EV charging infrastructure and the transition to clean electrification. Existing grid connections on site are optimised through smart-charging technologies to provide simultaneous charging for 12 EVs at up to 22kW. Its construction from an upcycled shipping container and portability negates the need for planning permission, further accelerating the deployment and installation process.

Made in the UK, Papilio3 emphasises eco-friendliness from its upcycled construction to its renewable power generation and end-of-life disposal. It addresses the common barriers to EV charging infrastructure – high costs, grid issues and lengthy planning processes – whilst enabling more businesses to commit to solar and take action to decarbonise the transport sector. Papilio3 is designed for fleet, workplace and destination EV charging, with simple and rapid installation, utilising existing grid connections and providing smart technologies to deliver fast, reliable and user-friendly EV charging.

“As a leader in the renewables sector, we are committed to setting an example by using innovative solutions to reduce our carbon footprint,” comments James Galloway, Global Product Director at Segen Ltd. “At the same time, we aim to ensure that students have a rewarding and positive experience during their time at the Academy. Providing a convenient and sustainable onsite EV charging solution will help us achieve that goal.”

Ben Marchant, CEO at 3ti, adds: “We are proud to strengthen our long-standing relationship with Segen by supplying our multi-award-winning Papilio3. Segen and 3ti have extensive common ground; we are both working to support businesses in the move towards a renewable-rich future that helps to decarbonise transport. It, therefore, felt very apt that our Papilio3 could help serve Segen’s needs at its training site, providing users with low-cost, low-carbon EV charging. It is the perfect use case to prove the validity of destination charging.”.

“It is no surprise to see a forward-thinking company like Segen grasp the opportunities that integrating solar with EV charging presents. It’s absolutely a win-win situation; Segen will realise the benefits of solar immediately, saving on electricity bills and instantly deploying much-needed EV charging infrastructure, while EV drivers can rest assured that they will receive a reliable charge and go home Driving on Sunshine. There has never been a better time to commit to solar and smart EV solar charging solutions. We believe they are the obvious solutions for any business seeking ways to affordably decarbonise transport, operations and reach EPC targets.”
