Solar-powered EV charging arrives in Uttoxeter town centre
East Staffordshire Borough Council is making EV charging more accessible with the introduction of a solar-powered charging hub in the heart of Uttoxeter.
Delivered by 3ti, the HALO FastHub provides 12 EV charging points, combining on-site solar generation with smart charging technology to support the council’s sustainability ambitions and the growing demand for public EV charging.
Cleaner, more accessible charging for the community
As more drivers make the switch to electric vehicles, access to reliable, convenient charging infrastructure is becoming increasingly important, particularly for those without the option to charge at home.
The new charging hub offers 12 charging points, delivering up to 22 kW per socket, with flexible charging speeds to suit different vehicles and energy requirements.
Designed for locations where drivers typically park for several hours, HALO is particularly well suited to town centres like Uttoxeter. Visitors can charge while shopping, working or enjoying the local area, making EV charging a convenient part of their everyday routine.
The hub also incorporates 42 solar panels, generating renewable electricity on-site to supplement energy drawn from the grid and help reduce reliance on grid-supplied power.
A simpler approach to EV charging infrastructure
Installing EV charging infrastructure can be challenging, particularly in busy public spaces where lengthy construction works can cause disruption.
HALO FastHub offers a different approach.
Built using a repurposed shipping container, the system is manufactured and tested off-site before being delivered as a complete charging hub. This modular approach significantly reduces the amount of on-site construction required, allowing installation and commissioning in as little as one day.
For local authorities, this means a faster, less disruptive route to delivering charging infrastructure, without the complexity typically associated with traditional installations.
Designed around the driver
Alongside its solar generation and charging capabilities, the Uttoxeter hub has been designed to make the charging experience straightforward and accessible.
Integrated LED lighting and CCTV support a safe and welcoming environment, while level access and accessibility features help accommodate a wider range of users.
Drivers can pay using contactless, app-based and roaming payment options, making it easy to access charging without unnecessary complications.
Supporting a more sustainable town centre
The project forms part of East Staffordshire Borough Council’s wider ambitions to improve local infrastructure, support cleaner transport and encourage regeneration in Uttoxeter.
By providing convenient public charging, the council is helping to remove one of the barriers to EV adoption, particularly for residents who do not have access to private driveways or home charging facilities.
The hub also creates opportunities for local businesses. With charging sessions suited to longer visits, EV drivers have more reason to spend time in the town centre, supporting shops, cafés and other local services.
It’s an example of how investment in EV infrastructure can deliver benefits beyond charging itself, contributing to a more accessible, sustainable and welcoming destination.
Making EV charging simpler
The Uttoxeter installation demonstrates how local authorities can introduce renewable-powered EV charging without the lengthy construction programmes often associated with conventional infrastructure.
By combining solar generation, flexible charging and rapid deployment in one integrated system, HALO FastHub provides a practical solution for destinations looking to support the transition to electric transport.
