Salford Royal Hospital

Salford Royal Hospital needed additional EV charging for patients and visitors, but traditional grid upgrades and months of disruptive civils weren't a practical option for a busy acute hospital.

The deployment

The Project Story

Challenge

More charging. Less disruption.

Salford Royal Hospital needed to expand EV charging for patients and visitors as demand continued to grow.
But on a busy acute hospital site, the conventional route of extensive civils and grid upgrades wasn’t a practical option. Any solution needed to work around day-to-day hospital operations, make effective use of the power already available and keep disruption to an absolute minimum.
The challenge was to deliver significantly more charging capacity without turning the installation into a lengthy infrastructure project.

Solution

wo hubs. One smart installation.

Two HALO FastHubs were installed at Salford Royal Hospital, providing 24 charge points alongside integrated solar generation.
Rather than treating each hub as a separate infrastructure project, the installation was designed around the site. Cabling was daisy-chained between the two units, reducing the amount of civils required and helping to halve the associated civils cost.

Crucially, HALO was designed to work within the hospital’s existing grid capacity, avoiding the need to wait for major grid reinforcement before additional EV charging could be delivered.

The complete installation was live in just three days, with the hospital remaining operational throughout.

Outcome

Charging in three days.

Patients and visitors now have greater access to convenient EV charging on site, delivered without the lengthy programme of works normally associated with expanding charging infrastructure.

The integrated solar canopies also generate renewable electricity on site, helping reduce reliance on grid electricity and supporting the Northern Care Alliance’s wider carbon reduction ambitions.

Most importantly, the project demonstrates what can be achieved when EV charging infrastructure is designed around the constraints of the site rather than expecting the site to adapt around the infrastructure.

We’re cutting our carbon footprint in practical ways and the new twin charging hub will make it even easier for visitors with electric vehicles to recharge while they’re here
